In the first place, I have to say that Bait and Switch annoyed me. Ehrenreich wrote that she was looking for a public relations job paying in the mid-50,000s. She had no PR experience on her resume, though, to put her at that level. Her background as a reporter may have led her to think that the PR pros that she dealt with were somehow unqualified, but I felt that by assuming that she needed no work experience, she slighted people who have worked their way up.

Second, TheLadders published this report about http://www.theladders.com/career-advice/why-men-stronger-professional-networks-than-women Why Men Have Stronger Professional Networks than Women after you wrote the posting above. The report made so much sense. As a woman, I may have a larger and more emotionally-connected network, but if it comprises mainly women, they will not have access to the top jobs the way men have.

Hi Irene,

Yes, the Terms of Service clearly forbid having more than one profile and therefore users do risk the possibility of loosing access to the site. The bottom line here is to pay attention to your brand and actively manage your online presence. You are not doing yourself any favors by leaving a duplicate profile online.

Excellent advice, Valerie.

You've covered many problems which result from having more than one profile, whether they were created intentionally or accidentally. In addition to your overview, I'll toss in one more reason that having more than one LinkedIn profile is not a good idea - it is a violation of LinkedIn's User Agreement. While there is risk of losing access to the site for violating the agreement, I'd suggest that your point about sending a mixed or unclesr message about who you are is a much more likely problem.

Thanks for sharing your great advice!

Valerie

Great advice! You never know who knows whom in any organization so you have to be pleasant to everyone. I have known candidates who were rejected because of they way they treated the receptionist because, I guess, they didn't assume the receptionist was important enough to rate courtesy. Wrong. Love your blog...you have terrific insights.

Hi Nicolette,

I just checked out your new blog, great job! Yes, transition takes work and courage, but it can be done and done well. I have tremendous faith in you, my friend!

What a great story! Switching from blue collar to white collar is a huge leap - one that demands not only a whole new set of skills, but also new work etiquette. It's inspirational that he did it. Thanks for sharing the story, Valerie. It makes our transititions look manageable by comparison.
And thanks for being a role model and inspiration with your blog. I just started my own blog - about green and healthy homes - yesterday.

Valerie, you have a great blog going here. We've linked to it on our women's leadership blogroll. You listed some great organizations in the area for networking, many of them I've attended myself. For any of your readers who are "emerging leaders" our organization, Future Women Leaders has a lot of great networking events at a very low cost.

@noelle I am glad you are going to consider the seminar. I would strongly suggest that you sign up right away as I believe there is some prep work to bring along. I believe that they will send you what you need. It is basically some thinking/writing exercises so you know how you want to present yourself. Like I said this is a hands-on seminar where you will actually walk out with a basic blog setup. Pretty cool, huh? Enjoy! and say "Hi" to Dean and Susan for me.

I have also reached out to recruiters that blog and posted comments, followed them on Twitter, even friended them on Facebook to both better understand the new tools and methods, but also become part of the hidden society they are looking to hire.
